ELLIOT GLICKSMAN: Drunk driving is a tremendous problem in Arizona and everywhere. Hundreds of people lose their lives every year in Arizona in alcohol related crashes.
When you are investigating an alcohol related crash you have to look at all the people responsible. Obviously the drunk driver, the impaired driver bears responsibility. But in the case of an underage drinker, you have to look to who provided alcohol or gave alcohol to that driver.
In the case of a bar or a liquor licensee, you want to know did the bar serve someone that they knew or certainly should have known was impaired? Because if they did, they bear responsibility also.
My goal is to put myself out of business. At least in so far as bringing actions for deaths and injuries caused by drunk drivers. I am a volunteer for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. I am on the advisory board of a group called Homicide Survivors. I speak at local high schools.
When we bring civil lawsuits against parents who give their underage children access to alcohol, college kids who give their underage buddies alcohol, bars that over serve their customers. I think that it has an effect. And I think the more we do it and the more they are held responsible, and have to accept responsibility and see the harm that they have caused; I do think that we are changing the culture.
